City in Poland, on the Bystrzyca River, 150
km/95 mi SE of Warsaw; population (1985)
324,000. Industries include textiles,
engineering, aircraft, and electrical goods.
A trading centre from the 10th century, it
has an ancient citadel, 16th-century
cathedral, and a university (1918). A council
of workers and peasants proclaimed Poland's
independence at Lublin in 1918; and a
Russian-sponsored committee of national
liberation, which proclaimed itself the
provincial government of Poland at Lublin on
31 Dec 1944, was recognized by Russia five
days later.
