  6. has an ancient citadel, 16th-century
  7. cathedral, and a university (1918). A council
  8. of workers and peasants proclaimed Poland's
  9. independence at Lublin in 1918; and a
  10. Russian-sponsored committee of national
  11. liberation, which proclaimed itself the
  12. provincial government of Poland at Lublin on
  13. 31 Dec 1944, was recognized by Russia five
  14. days later.
